The room spins when I roll over in bed. What could that be?

Brief spinning when you roll over, lie down or look up is typical of BPPV, a common inner ear problem where tiny crystals move into the wrong part of the balance canal. A physiotherapist can test for it and, if confirmed, use repositioning manoeuvres to move the crystals back.

Your physiotherapist asks about your symptoms, checks your eye movements, balance and neck, and tests positions that trigger dizziness. Treatment may include repositioning manoeuvres, gaze stability exercises and balance training, plus a home program.

If your dizziness is new, severe, constant, or comes with symptoms such as slurred speech, facial droop, weakness, double vision or a sudden severe headache, call 911. For ongoing or position-related dizziness, you can book a vestibular assessment directly, and we will refer you to your doctor if anything needs medical review.

Some tests and treatments can make you feel dizzy for a short time. If your dizziness is strong, consider having someone drive you to the first appointment. Free parking is available at the clinic.

Vestibular therapy is billed as physiotherapy, so it is usually covered under the physiotherapy benefit of your extended health plan, and it may be covered after a car accident depending on your claim.
